Paul Ryan has been known to lock step with Trump even when they disagree, but not anymore. The Republican Speaker of the House has called for an investigation into Trump’s ties with Russia.
Just a day after President George W. Bush said something similar, Ryan went on Today and spoke with Matt Lauer about Trump’s scandal. “We need answers,” Ryan said. “We need to make sure that nothing happened that shouldn’t have happened as we go forward. That’s exactly what we do in our jobs [in]Congress.”
Although Ryan did not go as far to call for a special prosecutor to conduct the investigation. However, it’s refreshing to see a high-ranking Republican calling for the much-needed investigation.
Other Republicans are coming out for an investigation of Trump as well. Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California went further than Ryan on Friday and called for an investigation with a special prosecutor.
It’s a great sign that Republicans are jumping on board the campaign to investigate Trump’s ties with Russia. We all should put country before party and defend this nation from a Russian puppet.
Unfortunately, some representatives still need convincing. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House intelligence committee, believes there is no evidence that Trump and Russia are linked.
“We still have not seen any evidence of anyone from the Trump campaign or any other campaign, for that matter, that’s communicated with the Russian government,” Nunes said.
However, the majority of the intelligence community disagrees with Nunes’s assessment. The evidence that Trump is compromised by the Kremlin is overwhelming.
If he isn’t compromised, what is there to hide. Congress spent countless hours and lots of money investigating Benghazi with much less evidence of corruption, only to find no wrongdoing on Clinton’s part.
Why won’t they investigate Trump with a mountain of evidence? Because they might just find something.
Unfortunately, Ryan believes that the House intelligence committee is the group to head up the investigation. With Nunes in the lead, an investigation lead by that committee would lead nowhere.
“Both the House and the Senate intelligence committees are beginning their investigations right now. We’ve had one for a while. We’re increasing the scope of the investigation,” Ryan said. “We think the intelligence community is the right place to do it.”
While we agree with Ryan that an investigation must take place, the House intelligence committee is not the right outlet. Only a special prosecutor would give this issue the non-partisan attention it deserves.
Without a special prosecutor, there’s no way the American people will get the answers we deserve. It is the government’s duty to keep us safe from foreign invaders, and an investigation into Trump must happen in order to fulfill that duty.
Ryan and other Republicans have taken the first step toward transparency by calling for an investigation. However, more must be done.
Pressure your representatives to support a special prosecutor for the investigation. Call Congress today!
