Hell might have just frozen over because Obama’s arch-nemesis, California Republican Darrell Issa, would’ve been the last person we expected to go against Team Trump. In a surprise move against his party, Issa is now calling for a special prosecutor to look into Trump’s Russia connections.
Obama once called Issa “shameless” and accused him of only seeking to “obstruct and to waste taxpayer dollars on trumped-up investigations that have led to nowhere.” That gives you an idea of how much the stakes have changed since then.
Issa just went on liberal firebrand Bill Maher’s Real Time show for an interview. It was during this interview that Issa declared he’s ready to play ball with the Democrats when it comes to Trump’s ties to Russia.
“You can’t have somebody, a friend of mine, Jeff Sessions, who was on the campaign, and who was an appointee,” Issa said. “You’re going to need to use the special prosecutor’s statute and office.”
Issa is referring to Jeff Sessions, the man who Trump appointed as his Attorney General. Sessions only got the gig as AG because he was Trump’s earliest senatorial endorsement, so Issa is saying Sessions would obviously be too biased to run a real investigation into his boss.
Issa’s also going against the grain regarding his GOP colleagues in that he is calling for MORE town halls and more interaction with the public. In contrast, many of his peers have been lambasted for dumb answers during town halls or for skipping the events altogether.
Stranger yet, Issa is also skeptical toward the “repeal/replace” strategy many of his Republican friends have for Obamacare. Could it really be that Obama’s biggest Republican thorn is now becoming a thorn for the Republicans themselves?
There’s some perspective here that helps Issa’s reversals make a lot more sense. He just BARELY won his last election in a district brimming with Democrats, so he knows he’ll be sent packing from Washington for good if he doesn’t start delivering some olive branches to his left-leaning constituents.
That’s politics for you. Issa was also been behind some despicable measures in the past, but him calling for a special prosecutor to look into Trump is definitely saying the right thing at the right time.
Whether his constituents decide to keep Issa around is up to them. In the meantime, though, we’re happy that any Republican is so vocally against Trump because that’s just downright awful PR for the Orange One.
In all honesty, Issa is just fighting for his political life right now. We’ll take a strange alliance, though, seeing as how it looks like American democracy is fighting for its life now, too.
As things continue to be investigated more and more, don’t be surprised if you see more and more Republicans make reversals like Issa. The only tragedy is that they should’ve done it sooner.
It’s time to buckle down and see where these investigations into Trump take us. There are some very rough weeks ahead for sure.
The fight for everything that is good and just lies before all of us now. At this rate, the world will look back on these days as the most decisive moments in the 21st century.
