President Donald Trump is looking for potential candidates to fill the many vacancies in his government.
The office of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy is still vacant and Trump just offered Microsoft’s Bill Gates the job in an Oval Office visit last month, according to Gates.
Gates is not interested and simply told him it was “not a good use of my time.” Gates was talking to the president about a universal flu vaccine when he made this offer
Gates remembers asking, “You should associate yourself with American innovation. Wouldn’t you love to have the universal flu vaccine be something that really got kicked off and energized by you?”
Trump was very responsive, immediately getting the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the phone. He said to the commissioner, “Hey, Gates says there’s a universal flu vaccine. Is that crazy?”
Gates says he mentioned the science office vacancy to Trump, telling him that many in the science community are concerned about it. Gates says he told the president “Hey, maybe we should have a science adviser.” Gates says, “He said: Did I want to be the science adviser?” To which Gates said, “That’s not a good use of my time.”
