An op-ed in Korea’s leading independent daily newspaper, Hankyoreh, tweeted by the Wall Street Journal‘s Seoul bureau chief, Jonathan Cheng, divulged that White House National Security Council senior director for Asian Affairs, Matthew Pottinger, said, “in a recent closed-door meeting with U.S. experts on Korean Peninsula issues that a limited strike on the North “might help in the midterm elections.”
Hankyroeh: “Matthew Pottinger was reported as saying in a recent closed-door meeting with US experts on Korean Peninsula issues that a limited strike on the North ‘might help in the midterm elections.’
The editorial reveals that South Koreans fear that Trump, in order to save his failing presidency, will attempt a “bloody nose” strategy, unleashing a pre-emptive missile strike against North Korea’s nuclear facilities, in the wake of the U.S. president’s game of nuclear chicken with dictator, Kim Jong-Un.
Rather than prevent a nuclear attack on American soil, or a missile attack on America’s ally, South Korea, the “bloody nose” strategy could ignite all-out war.
Trump’s blood-thirsty murmurings come just as North and South Korea have forged an unlikely and tenuous partnership in preparation for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Word of the “bloody nose” strategy has surfaced since Trump dropped Victor Cha’s candidacy for Ambassador of South Korea, after Cha criticized the perilous plan.
According to the Hankyoreh editorial:
According to Cha’s Washington Post piece, some ultra-hardliners have argued that the risk of endangering the lives of the 230,000 Americans living in South Korea if the bloody nose strategy escalates is worth taking in terms of ‘long-term interests’ and the ‘safety of Americans living in the continental US.’ The fates of 50 million South Koreans don’t even warrant a mention.
Trump would lose no sleep over military and civilian casualties on the Korean Penninsula, if it means he can snatch political survival out of the jaws of almost-certain indictment as a result of Special Prosecutor Mueller’s Russia investigation.
By rallying public sentiment with a war, he could help maintain a Republican-held congress, which would save him from impeachment at the hands of a Democratic majority.
The Presidon’t has proven himself capable of anything, including attacking democratic institutions like the FBI and Department of Justice, in order to save his own hide from the consequences of his treason.
What is to stop Trump from declaring war on North Korea and endangering all of humanity, if it means staying in power?
