President Donald Trump may be shouting that he is getting jobs back to the United States, and he is going to end immigration soon.
Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s favorite club, and his “Winter White House,” was recently permitted to hire 70 maids, cooks, and servers for their current tourist season, all from foreign countries, through the H-2B visa program.
In Palm Beach County, 2,159 workers were hired for low-paying temporary jobs this winter. And nationwide, employers were granted permission to employ almost 134,000 workers.
What’s even more astounding is that this is an increase from last year, under Barack Obama’s administration. And even worse, the club isn’t even trying to hire Americans. “We currently have 5,136 qualified candidates in Palm Beach County for various hospitality positions listed in the Employ Florida state jobs database,” CareerSource spokesman Tom Veenstra said Friday.
Despite the number of qualified Americans needing those jobs, Mar-a-Lago goes right for the H-2B visas. As the Palm Beach Post reports:
While Mar-a-Lago asks the federal government for dozens of H-2B visas every tourist season, the private club rarely asks CareerSource for help finding a local employee, Veenstra said. Mar-a-Lago in 2015 put in a request for a single banquet server.
