The name “Donald Trump” can divide friends and few times families who do not agree or agree with the president. A homeowner who is staying anonymous has refused to sell her Sacramento, California home to Trump supporters.
The woman’s realtor started off her job by doing what any realtor would do: show the house to all potential buyers. However, the Sacramento house seller soon became dissatisfied with the potential buyers of her beloved home. The woman says that her home has been in the family for decades, and therefore, she’s quite protective of it. Essentially, she doesn’t want the home to go to buyers whose ideals would disrespect those of her family’s tradition.
Of course, there has been incredible backlash. Some people see the woman’s refusal to sell her home to anyone qualified as discriminatory and foolish. A local attorney, Allen Sawyer, expressed his distaste for the situation as well. According to Sawyer, the buyer’s request is against the law. He says the situation is “…an unlawful contractual term that infringes the freedom of association and first amendment rights.”
“People have a right to believe what they want to believe,” Sawyer added. “And they shouldn’t be restricted from purchasing property based on that.”
Now, is it ethical? That’s up in the air. As is the case with this administration as a whole, ethics are a grayer area than ever before.
